During the 13th century in the Meditteranean there was a great deal of anxiety about the accumulation of wealth; from wealthy, upper middle class families came the two great founders of the first and second Franciscan orders – Francis and Clare. The first order (male) Franciscans earned their living through begging and preaching, while the second order (female, sometimes called the Poor Clares or Clarissans), though cloistered, also lived lives devoted to extreme poverty and devotion. This volume contains English translations of the complete works of Francis and Clare, including letters, rules of living, and a number of blessings, exhortations, and canticles. Each selection is preceded by a brief historical introduction.
