  • Introduction

Life of the Carthusian monk, scholar, and bishop, Hugh of Lincoln, written by his chaplain just after Hugh’s death. Focuses on Hugh as a monk and saint more than as an administrator and scholar, but departs from many of the standard conventions of hagiography to give a more personal, historical, accurate depiction of Hugh’s character than is common in most saints’ lives. Vol. 1 contains Books 1-3 of the Life. Vol. 2 contains Books 4-5 of the Life. Includes maps.

Introduction (vii-liv) covers the author and contents of the Life; St. Hugh’s episcopate; the history of the Carthusians at Witham; information of manuscript and publication history of the text.
