  • Introduction

This volume presents excerpts from the most influential monastic rules for both the Greek and Latin traditions (although most of the sources represent the Latin tradition). The material was selected carefully to act as a source book for undergraduates or graduate students looking for an introduction to new areas of medieval culture and society. An exact list of the excerpts (the chapters and questions from each source) are as follows:

  • Rule of St. Basil (questions 7, 15, 25, 33, 41, 47,)
  • Rule of Saint Augustine (chapters 1, 4, 6,)
  • Saint Benedict’s Rule for Monks (chapters 1, 2, 4, 5, 22, 30, 37, 40, 48, 53, 57, 58, 59, 73)
  • The Rule of 1223 of Saint Francis (chapters 1, 2, 3, 5, 11)
  • The Rule for Nuns of Saint Caesarius of Arles (chapters 1, 2, 4, 5, 7, 18, 71, 72, 73)
  • The First Rule of the Third Order of Saint Francis of Assisi
  • The Rule of Saint Clare (chapters 1, 2, 5, 11)

The selections of primary source texts are surrounded by analysis and exposition of the texts. The volume is intended for students, to provide a look at the evolution of monastic life and the development of the medieval monastic tradition.
