Comments:

The Chronicle of Fredegar (d. 660) is the main source for Western European events of the seventh century, a formative period from which few sources survive. Fredegar’s Frankish history relies heavily on Gregory of Tours’s history. Both are universal histories beginning with Creation, but this edition includes only Fredegar’s fourth book, which begins in 583 and features events more contemporary with Fredegar’s life. Although the Chronicle exists in thirty four manuscripts, this edition is based on MS Paris 10910 and includes a facsimile of the manuscript (from the prologue) for those interested in paleography or codicology.

Introduction Summary:

The introduction (pp. ix-lxiii) discusses the chronicle’s content, authorship, composition, language, manuscripts, and editions.
