A Christian philosopher in the service of the Ostrogothic king Theodoric the Great, Boethius is best remembered for his De Consolatione Philosophae. Written while Boethius was imprisoned by his former employer on suspicion of espionage for the Byzantine emperor, the work is an allegory which describes a conversation between the author and Lady Philosophy and considering topics such as free will and fortune.
