Gregory of Tours Bishop, Saint
lived 539 - 594
Gregory of Tours was born to an upper-class family in Clement in Central Gaul in c. 539. His father died when he was young, leaving him in the care of his uncle Gallus, and then a priest named Avitus when his mother moved to Burgundy. He spent most of his life in Tours and became the Bishop of Tours in 573. He is most well-known for his work Historia Francorum, written in ungrammatical Latin, which is an important source for the history of the Gauls and Franks. He also wrote hagiographies, most notably about St. Martin of Tours. He died in Tours c. 594. TLM
