Alcuin, a Northumbrian scholar and theologian, was educated and taught in York but attracted the attention of Charlemagne and became attached to his court as master of the palace school, where he was influential in bringing about the Carolingian renaissance. Later in life he became Abbot of St. Martin’s, Tours. A prolific author, he wrote theological, grammatical, and educational treatises as well as poetry.
