Born in Mainz, Rabanus entered the Benedictine monastery at Fulda, but was soon sent to Tours to study under Alcuin. On his return to Fulda, he became the head-master of the monastic school and was later elected the abbot. After a brief retirement, he was elected to be the archbishop of Mainz and died in that office. He was one of the prolific writers of the Carolingian Renaissance; he wrote many Biblical commentaries, treatises, homilies, and several collections of poetry.
