Jerome Saint

Jerome was an Illyrian Christian priest, best known for his Latin translation of the Bible, the Vulgate, and his extensive corpus of writings. He was the author of scriptural commentaries, theological tracts, historical and biographical writings, and a huge number of letters, which provide valuable insight into the theological and ecclesiastical disputes of his day. Most of his writings are highly polemical in character. Jerome was an advocate of strict asceticism, which was the subject of many of his letters and tracts (and also what caused him to be involved in so many disputes with other churchmen during this period). He was also the recipient of a famous dream in which Christ appears to him and calls him a Ciceronian, a follower of Cicero, rather than a Christian, due to his great love for classical (pagan) literature. He is considered to be a Doctor of the Church by the Roman Catholic Church.
