Joinville, Jean
lived 1224 - 1317
John of Joinville was a great chronicler of medieval France. He is most famous for The Life of Saint Louis a biography of Louis IX of France that also chronicled his experience with Louis IX on the Seventh Crusade. Joinville was from a noble Champenoise family and was educated at the court of Theobald IV, count of Champagne. After the death of his father he became seneschal of Champagne and in 1241 he accompanied Theobald to the court of Louis IX, where he decided to join the Seventh Crusade. Joinville was held in captivity with Louis while on crusade and became an advisor to him. He did not accompany Louis IX on the eighth crusade. Joinville gave testimony for the canonization of Louis IX in 1282.
