Marcellinus, Ammianus

Ammianus Marcellinus was a Roman soldier and historian who wrote a major historical account that chronicled the history of Rome from the accession of the emperor Nerva in 96 to the death of Valens at the Battle of Adrianople in 378. This work is known as the Res Gestae. He was born in the Greek-speaking East, possibly in Syria or Phoenicia. He was a native speaker of Greek but he wrote his history in Latin. Ammianus was a soldier in the army of Constantius II and Julian in Gaul and Persia.
