Paul the Deacon Paulus Diaconus

lived 720 - 799

Born in Friuli to a noble Lombard family, Paul was likely educated in the court of the Lombard king Ratchis. He lived in the court at Benevento and later as a monk at Monte Cassino. Here he eventually came into contact with Charlemagne who brought him to his own court on account of his literary achievements. He eventually returned to Monte Cassino which is likely where he died at the very end of the eighth century. He was a major contributor to the Carolingian Renaissance, and his most celebrated work was his History of the Lombards although he also wrote poems, songs, letters, homilies, and a continuation of Eutropius’ Roman History.
