Porete, Marguerite
died 1310 - 1310
Marguerite of Porete was a mystic and Beguine possibly from Hainaut. She is known for her mystical treatise titled Mirouer des simples ames (the Mirror of Simple Souls), which was written in Old French about the union of the soul to God through love. For this work, Marguerite was tried for heresy. She refused to recant or cease circulating her work, and was consequently burned at the stake in Paris on June 1, 1310.
