Comments:
This volume contains dozens of poems of a rather miscellaneous nature, most of which are drawn from Lambeth MS. No. 306, along with many short religious poems from MS. Harley 7322. The preface is followed by “Notes on the Stacyons of Rome” by W.M. Rossetti, which provides background information about many of the sites described in the poem. There is an index of people and places, as well as a glossarial index. Marginal notes summarize the texts throughout. The entire book is available on the Corpus of Middle English Prose and Verse website.
Introduction Summary:
Furnivall’s brief preface (pp. ix-xix) explains why these poems are grouped together in one volume, and discusses some of his process of discovering these poems and their meanings. He explains the allusions behind the political poems.
